To: freebsd-ports@freebsd.org Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 12:37:37 -0800 (PST) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL43 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-freebsd-ports@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Hi, i would like to request the creation of a new port category for packages destined to be used in PicoBSD. The goal would be to have "small" versions of things which are already used in freebsd, either as part of the standard distribution or regular ports. I already have one such port, and it is ssh1 . The standard port uses a lot of common code in ssh/sshd/scp, and the "small" port makes a single binary (using crunchgen-like techniques) to reduce the memory footprint of the three. Unfortunately it is not possible to move the common code to a library because of name clashes with symbols in other libraries, and also because in the original code the "shared" module refer to symbols in the non-shared modules (of which there are multiple implementations which i had to fix). Another such candidate would be a small version of tcpdump: the tcpdump in 3.4 used to take ~48KB compressed, the version in STABLE is over 100KB compressed. Opinions ? And in case there is agreement, whom should i ask to create the new category ? cheers luigi ----------------------------------+----------------------------------------- Luigi RIZZO, luigi@iet.unipi.it .
