All was not lost... I booted into single user mode and physically remove = the password for root! Basically; What did I miss? I looked at /etc/auth.conf did not seem to do anything! I looked at each of the individual entries and all the fields were = there! I can not run the 'passwd' program because it hangs! HELP!
