This is because you are probably using FreeBSD 2.2.2 or older. In those
versions the IPX code used the same MAC address on all interfaces with
varying degrees of success. It is fixed in 2.2.5 and later.

Well you should be able to, but route(8) does not know about the IPX
protocol yet.

While the routing table code will probably be able to handle it, I doubt
if the rest of the IPX networking will.

If everything is configured correctly it should be able to yes.

It sounds like you are not looking for a router, but a bridge? :-) Why is
it important to have the same net address? There are 4G of them.

That is probably the arp code that also use routing tables to speed things
up, but that is only my guess.

PS. Remember that the FreeBSD IPX code only supports Ethernet_II frames.
