The easiest way is to make filesystems on the second drive for each
filesystem on the first drive. Then just use something like tar to back it
up. It won't make the second drive bootable, though.

I was trying to do this also, and decided to go ahead with a raid
controller. I ordered the 3ware 6200 from CDW for $119. I have not received
it yet. It has the nice effect of almost doubling read transfers rates.
