Thanks to those that suggested several problem areas. I found that SO is sitting on a select call, waiting for something. After about 10 minutes it timesout and displays the program. I'll need to run this down, must be something to do with how SO finds my display. BTW, This system is a single Pent 133 32MB, ATI Mach64 2MB video, all SCSI peripherials.
