If you install the latest CPAN Bundle you should find that the tendency for perl to try and upgrade itself goes away (or at least, happens a lot less often): perl -MCPAN -e 'install Bundle::CPAN' Current version is CPAN-1.59_54 compared to CPAN-1.48 as bundled with perl5.005_03.
