Actually it turned out to be something similar.  The folks running the Macs
on the subnet had specified the wrong gateway address.

If it hadn't been my first time configuring a FreeBSD box to do this I 
would have started pointing the finger at them much sooner.

Thanks to all for confirming that I had indeed done everything correctly.

I just needed a known machine to plug in and didn't have a spare machine 
at the time.
