 A kernel compiled with

 nodevice snd_hda

 boots indeed fine.

I also tried the hdac patch from

 http://svnweb.freebsd.org/base?view=revision&revision=228726

to get support for the VIA VT1708S High Definition Audio Codec on my board,
still no joy (i.e. booting a kernel compiled with 228726 freezes as well)

Seems like FreeBSD 9.0-REL will be unusable for VIA mainboard owners.
