Yes, we run FreeBSD on a number of ProLiants. Currently we have it installed
on a 3000 (w/ dual CPU) and a 1850R. All servers have Compaq Smart RAID
controllers.

The onboard/older Compaq 10/100 Intelligent cards use a Texas Instruments
ThunderLAN chipset so are supported by the tl driver (with miibus). The
newer Compaq 10/100 cards use the Intel 10/100B PRO (82558B) chipset so are
supported by the fxp driver.

Compaq RAID is supported by the ida driver but I understand if you use the
newer RAID card (I forget the name of it) you need to use 4.1.1-RELEASE or
later.

Onboard SCSI cards use Symbios/NCR chipsets (like NCR53C810) and so are
covered by the sym driver.

All in all we haven't had an issue with FreeBSD on the Compaq machines.

Feel free to drop me an email directly if you'd like copies of dmesg or
kernel configs etc. Happy to help.

Aaron
