Please state a rationale for this. To me, long device names often means device names that tell me what is going on. And these days, EVERYBODY has a shell with filename completion - so one of the reasons for the initial choice of short names has gone. I don't think that names should be long for their own sake, but I think they should be intuitive "enough". Extra learning cost and recognition cost should only be taken if it has a specific benefit.
