While setting up a friends DSL gateway I encountered the following:
Invoking PPPoE over the device wouldn't work until I do:
  # ifconfig ed0 1.1.1.1 ...
  <insert kernel complains about ed0 timing out>
  # ifconfig ed0 delete.
After that, PPPoE works.

Could someone please enlighten me about the internal magic going on?
