As others have mentioned your advisor is there to advise and instruct
you. Its fair game to challenge and question advice as that is just as
vital to learning as listening.

Just as with a job interview, you should be interviewing the company
just as hard as they are interviewing you in return. So if your advisor
thinks its wise for you to produce a top ten list justifying FreeBSD
then its just as valid for him/her to produce similar for NT before
seeing your list.

Think if I were doing the FreeBSD list the top item would be:

	FreeBSD is built upon well known mature standards which 
	have stood the test of time. NT is a moving target
	known to poorly implement industry standards.

Second item would be:

	I'm here to learn (presumably computer stuff). If there
	is any question about what is happening, with FreeBSD
	I have the ears of those who maintain the code. And I
	have access to the source code, the commit comments,
	and email list archives arguing the merits of A vs B
	which resulted in the current version. And any thing
	I don't like, I can change on my personal version.
