Compilation and installation went smoothly (I did "portupgrade -v --batch chromium"), but when I started the Chromium, it hanged with my home page (that is www.google.com) and a Page(s) Unresponsive pop-up menu appears minutes later.

Have you tried passing the --single-process argument (on the command
line) to chromium when starting it? From your description this should
get you a more functional browser, although some functionality might not
be available in this mode.

There is a ticket about it here:
http://trillian.chruetertee.ch/chromium/ticket/13 , if you have a
machine with a lot of memory (more than 4 GB) and/or some knowledge
about libthr.
