I haven't tried that yet. But I did try dumping to another USB disk with identical harddisk but slightly different enclosure, which worked fine. So I guess that Yoshihiro is right, and the disk is crapping out. Or the enclosure is malfunctioning. Unfortunately I can't check the drives with smartctl; they produce an SCSI error. I'll try 'camcontrol defects', and see if that turns up anything.
