I see compositing managers as being essentially akin to window managers, in terms of operating as an x client that deals with appearance and management of windows on the screen. It is actually expected that in some cases they will be the same program (as in metacity, if metacity's compositing manager becomes usable). It's a pretty gray area, though, I'd say.
