(It needed a very recent version of svgalib which only worked under linux, or something like that.) So, after messing about with various linuxes, it now mostly works under slackware. I'm not saying it's impossible to get advancemame to work under fbsd, but I at least could not do it easily, so rather than fight it, I just went with something that worked out of the box. If your computer is reasonably recent, I doubt you'll have to worry about performance.
