There is no longer a 4.1-stable it is now 4.1.1-stable. I just got through doing an RELENG_4 cvsup and buildworld build[install]kernel, and installworld. I didn't have any problems once they fixed sendmail. Were you doing the make as root? You might have to follow the handbook and remove the files in /usr/obj.
