Figured this out - the new mobo has an optional stub for a second add on 
LAN card (the VIA Rhine VT6102 II) and the card I removed happened to be 
a VIA VT6105 Rhine III (close enough to confused me!). Disabling the 
optional stub in the BIOS has cleaned the various warnings.
