And, lo and behold, the Tk problem _was_ related, since it solved that problem as well. Sorry to report a known bug. I did check the FAQ, and I even searched the Usenet archives through the FreeBSD WWW page, but hadn't seen anything. I don't know the proper mechanism, but this bug should be altered to reference this workaround as a solution to both problems.
