We're probably going to be :using 2.2 here for a goodly while, and this change doesn't inconvenience :the default case, while making non-default cases DTRT. I'm sure we're :not the only one that will be hanging out on 2.2 for a while, and I doubt :we're the only ones using non-standard username lengths (or possible :other such fields).
