Sorry for answering my own question -- I have used the programs from http://www.eng.auburn.edu/~doug/ups.html. The cable pinout is: DB9 Female (PC port) DB9 Male (UPS) Pin #5 (SG)<--------------> Pine #4 (ground) Pin #8 (CTS)<-------------> Pine #2 (Power Failure) Pin #4 (DTR)<-------------> Pine #1 (UPS shutdown) Pin #1 (DCD)<-------------> Pine #5 (Low Battery). There also should be a resistor (10k ohm) on the PC side, connecting pins 1 and 7, but I didn't have it. The setup worked without the resistor.
