i went out and purchased freebsd 2.2.5
and i am having the same problem after the installation it telling me 
can't find  the kernel.

Is your 4gig hard drive an Ultra-DMA IDE drive? If so, 2.2.2 won't talk
to it; you'll need FreeBSD-CURRENT.
