Instead of make CHRIST, I only use make:

# cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf
# copy GENERIC CHRIST
# vi CHRIST                 <-- make changes as you needed
# /usr/sbin/config CHRIST
# cd ../../compile/CHRIST
# make depend
# make		             <-- I do not use make CHRIST
# make install

If these do not work out, maybe some of your files are screwed up.
