I'm certain there was some mention of an issue with lynx in 4.0 or 4.1
and later .... something to do with security perhaps ??

I'm no expert at compiling stuff but I noticed something at the lynx
homepage
about the issue with FreeBSD 4.x and understood the workaround was to
download / compile / install the latest version from source
