screen from the ports, right?  I use it on FreeBSD-5.0-RELEASE, no
problems.

Was it a clean install of FreeBSD 5?  Or did you go for an upgrade of
an existing 4.x build?  Either way, try rebuilding the screen port 
from a new ports framework, and see how you go.
