Difficult to say without knowing what version of FreeBSD you're running.
Always mention the version of FreeBSD you're running when mailing this
list. :-)

Suffice it to say that, if you're running FreeBSD 3.0 or later, you can
add this line to your /etc/make.conf:

NO_SENDMAIL=	true
