Reinstalled 4.0 and this time it did create a swap file on my one and only hard drive; had no problem creating the ram drive following the usual instructions for earlier releases. None of the other PCs I installed using the same CDROM had this problem; guess it was just one of those weird things. Thanks for all the input.
