 Just FYI, this is what ex/vi traditionally calls a "modeline", and sets modes for individual files (like *Text* or whatever does for Emacs).  However, FreeBSD's vi does not (and will never) implement it because it's a security hole.
 
 I agree that it doesn't belong there.
