As far as i remember FreeBSD-4 did not have a true lockd, only a fake one, so it was always working no problem. I have used all versions of FreeBSD-5 up to 6.0 and 6.1 on my client with a Linux server, and i can say that 6.1 is the first one which works OK for me.
