Perhaps outline the steps you are doing

e.g.

cvsup -g -L2 stable-supfile
cd /usr/src/etc and merge file changes by hand
or
use mergemaster
rm -R /usr/obj
cd /usr/src
make -j2 world > /var/log/world.out
make buildkernel KERNCONF=<YOUR_KERNEL_HERE>
make installkernel  KERNCONF=<YOUR_KERNEL_HERE>

and so on... Is that what you are doing ?  And your cvsup file looks like

*default host=cvsup11.FreeBSD.org
*default base=/usr
*default prefix=/usr
*default release=cvs tag=RELENG_4
*default delete use-rel-suffix
src-all

details please, otherwise everyone will be taking guesses...
