My sysctl does in deed not show hw.psm.synaptics_support="1", but my touchpad and the little red thingy both work correctly anyway. loader.conf tunables are generally not represented in sysctl. If you've set the tunable and rebooted, running: % kenv hw.psm.synaptics_support should print a "1"
