Though I used to run Ben Laurie's solution - at least, I thought it was Ben's <g> - I switched to mod_ssl when I switched to xBSD. At the moment I'm running mod_ssl on boxes varying from 3.4 to 4.2. Don't know why I switched to mod_ssl, most likely because it was new then. Never could resist shiny stuff <g>. But it worked for me. I can vaguely recall also trying Ben's SSL module, which gets statically compiled into apache if I'm not mistaken, and also had some troubles with it. But that was several months ago and I was running into troubles with near everything (had a very good excuse, but that's a long and OT story ;). With apache13 and the separate mod_xxx's all went well. As to the ports near godlike powers, think Ragnarok. It's good, but it ain't perfect. Then again... what is? You should've seen what Debian once did to my install <g>.
