You really need to use the ports collection for this. I was inspecting the patches for gnome (and its dependencies) and they are quite extensive. I could never get the original sources to compile correctly. As a project to learn more about FreeBSD, I started duplicating the port patches, but some of them are not obvious to a newbie at BSD and X11 programming.
