Ok, I umounted and remounted without -L en-US.UTF-8, and reproduced your is=
sue:

$ ls ./testdir
ls: 234test?: Invalid argument

So -L <foo>.UTF-8 should work around the issue.  Why a UTF-8 encoding isn't=
 the
default, I don't know.
