Hello,

you new to change your .xinitrc file to read:

exec startkde

the .xinitrc file is found in your home directory ie: /home/huw/.xinitrc

after this kde will run when you type startx

you might want to have a look at the handbook section on kde and kdm, a 
graphical login screen.
