I would take a look at that. Also, do you have a firewall enabled? If so, you might find any log entries useful. I personally like to turn on an "open" firewall with full logging, or use tcpdump to monitor traffic when problems occur. You can start initd with -d and -l options to turn on debugging and log all connection attempts. This might give you some information.
