There is some type of limit but the explanation is beyond me.... This was discussed some time ago, I wish I could remember which list. Probably freebsd-hackers, which I read for a little while (tracking 3 or more FBSD lists will eat your whole day... :-\) You might try searching at http://groups.google.com looking for FreeBSD, or of course try the archives at freebsd.org ....
