If you think about it, what Netscape did was to make up for
a deficiency in Win9X by creating the concept of a different
directory for each user and called them "profiles". The directories
are to be found under Program Files/Netscape/Users . These are
similar to the .netscape directory found in your home directory with
FreeBSD.

I have two mail servers I check regularly, my home server and the
one at work. I have different user names, so I just create another
user on FreeBSD with the other name. This creates, not just a
Netscape user directory, but the possibility of copying and modifying
your window manager to the new directory and having a different
desktop setup. You have a whole directory tree with *permissions*
and other strange unix concepts!

I think Netscape didn't do it because it would be less flexible.
