Hrrrmmm... did you mount all your disks when you went into single user mode? After you get the shell prompt you should do the following: fsck -p mount -a Then go through the mergemaster steps. If that's not the issue, I'm not sure what the problem might be. Have you tried running mergemaster in multi-user mode (i.e., a normal boot)? That's how I run it 80% of the time.
