I currently maintain two mail relay machines for a corporation of that
size.
They are P266's with 192MB RAM, 8GB disk, and are currently running
FreeBSD
2.2.7 with Exim 1.90. I recommend Exim highly over Sendmail - much
easier
and more flexible configuration. Each of these machines is dual homed to
an
internal and external network segment and Exim is configured to use the
appropriate interface when forwarding by looking at domain names, etc.
