Well, you don't state if you were trying to build it under FreeBSD, at least your comments about what your environment is are confusing. The FreeBSD port works find IF you use a current copy of the port to build it on a FreeBSD host, with a current copy of /usr/share/mk/bsd.port.mk installed on the machine. I can't comment at all about your Linux problems. The FreeBSD port will be useless there.
