If you are worried about disk drives, I would look for a manufacturer 
diagnostic tool.  Such tools can do things via an OS, but they can also 
tell the drive controller to do things directly.  For example, Seagate:

You might want to consider switching to ZFS; it includes data and 
metadata integrity checks that can detect "bit rot" (and fix it, if you 
have redundancy; such as mirrors).
