I think you should look at the specs of the monitor, a ViewSonic if I 
recall, and see what the possible ranges of refresh rates it can handle. 
I've had good luck choosing the "high frequency svga" option and then 
manually tuning the refresh rate ranges...

By the way, in my experience, the completed x server config doesn't look 
like much at all. It's been a flat gray window in the upper left, with the 
words "Contragulations..." and a choice to save the configuration. Save the 
config and then test it out with startx. I've never had to center the window 
with the congratulations...
