I put forward a scheme using some slight mods to bsd.subdir.mk and 
subdirectory Makefiles, but I was ignored.  Perhaps I should have
taken that as a "yes, go ahead"?  

This was tied in with the perl5 discussions. Hey Perl people, I
thought the "stable" perl5 was due out RSN.  What happened?  Atari
take over Perl development?
