I boot the machine with nothing but the CD-Rom drive and the USB stick. No fancy options or anything in the install process...just create one slice that takes up the whole drive, then one parition (da0s1a) mounted as "/"...about as basic as you can get. Any other thoughts? I don't understand why this wouldn't work...it's just another drive...
