It is okay to run dump on a live file system? I thought the answer to that was no, but in looking around I can not find that as a consideration in any of the threads. Even if it is okay from a data integrity standpoint (meaning the file system itself would be okay if you restored the entire tape) You have the problem of what happens to an individual file(s) you might wish to restore. As to procedures, you need to define your needs and budget, and work backwards. I.e, what is appropriate for the data you are backing up, do you have suitable hardware, any time constraints, and so forth. Not to forget, does it really work (test it all out). There is a pretty good thread on the hackers mailing list, and some but not much on isp.
