Stone, >Server Admin ALi MAGiK chipset performance tests I've seen (using various Windows benchmarks, not *nix) generally lag those of VIA and AMD. For a while, AMD was considered to have the best AMD-DDR chipset, the AMD 761, which incorporates a VIA southbridge. I have a motherboard with this chipset (ASUS A7M266), and I've always been quite happy with it. VIA's chipset had problems when first introduced as the KT266, but reviews of the revised KT266A have been laudatory, generally finding it the best AMD-DDR chipset currently on the market. See, e.g., http://www.anandtech.com/chipsets/showdoc.html?i=1528&p=11 . Again, it's performance with Windows that's being discussed. I haven't run into any *nix-specific performance measures of any of these chipsets, nor have I heard anything good or bad with regard to reliability. Last thought - do you really want to buy a chipset described as having "funky-fresh features?"
