FreeBSD 4.5-PRERELEASE #0: Sun Dec 23 18:22:32 CET 2001):

If this is the most serious problem that you've had then you're doing
very well.  This is an expected error message.

First off, the simple fix, so you can start it before reading the rest
of this explaination...  do a make buildworld first:
cd /usr/src
make buildworld
make buildkernel
mergemaster
make installworld
make installkernel

Doh!  Now it's _your_ turn to read /usr/src/UPDATING ;-)
Your make sequence is all wrong.
