You have to edit rc.conf to add:

nisdomainname="DOMAINNAME"
nis_client_enable="YES"

and possibly

nis_client_flags="-m -S YPMASTER"

RedHat only recently (as of 6.0) allowed you a sensible install step for YP.
I'm not sure whether the post-install options for FreeBSD do much in this way
yet.
