Different. NIS provides password and userid sync.  PAM allows you to choose 
what sort of authentication you want to use. Its quite a bit more involved 
than can be explained in a quick email.  ORA has a good book on NIS you 
might want to peruse in your local bookstore.  There are a couple of 
Kerberos as well.
